3 favorite films opening scene

Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2

Duration: 3 minutes

Summary: A superhero action film. "After saving Xander from Ronan's wrath, the Guardians are now recognized as heroes. Now the team must help their leader Star-lord uncover the truth behind his true heritage. Along the way, old foes turn to allies and betrayal is blooming, and the Guardian finds that they are p against a devastating new menace who is out to rule the galaxy." (imdb)

In the opening scene is one of the main characters dancing along to music while a fight against an alien is happening in the background. He is in his own world instead of helping. The music is very upbeat and cheery. His friends are protecting him from harm and watching him all while battling. This relates back to the plot by it shows how much the characters look out for each other. The cheery music also gives insight into the film. The upbeat music playing during a dangerous situation could help to add to the comedy effect of the movie or show that music and songs have significance to the plot.

The representation of the film is superheroes. You can tell this by them battling this giant alien not to save themselves but others. The sound effect of the guns and destruction over the music adds to the action genre. The music in the film is very upbeat. The older cheerful song singing about a happy day, while they are battling monsters, could mean this is just like any other day for them. A good day even. The characters' roles are likely to be a group of superheroes since it multiple people watching out the one dancing. The one dancing is also very small so he is probably the baby of the group. The mise-en-scene of the sequence is very colorful and brightening. It definitely looks like an outer space planet. The opening is not a very typical opening method for science fiction films. It does fit into the science fiction convections by the different looking planet, the monster alien and the rats, and especially the characters' costume and makeup. The cinematography of the scene is made up of a low-angle shot to follow along with the tiny character. The camera tracks his movements. There are no cuts in the sequence at all.

Dreamgirls
Duration: 3 minutes
summary: A musical. "A trio of black female soul singer cross over to the top pop charts in the early 1960s, facing their own personal struggles along the way" (imdb)

In the opening scene, a singing group gets ready to go on stage together. They then make their way onto the stage and perform a song together. They aren't big famous artists. We can also see two men backstage watching them perform. It connects to the overall plot because they are a group of singers who later on make it big as singers while overcoming many obstacles as a group. This is showing them starting from the bottom and later on in the film, making it big.
The purpose of the opening scene was to establish the genre. They are singing and dancing in what looks like their everyday life just like the typical musical method.

The visual elements are three black girls in afros singing and dancing on stage. The mise-en-scene- make it looks like the time period the '60s by the hair, the stage set up, and even the dance moves. The character placement of them onstage shows that there is the main lead, the girl in the middle. Even though her clothes don't make her stand out from her position it's clear she likes being front and center. The character placement also helps to tell about the character. The shots where we can get a good look at the character's faces like the two men backstage or the three girls on stage tell us they are the main characters. The song doesn't seem to relate back to the plot of the film which tells me it's a backstage musical. The diting in the scene cuts from all different angles like long shots, medium shots, shots from the back, close-ups, dolly ins. There is no pattern. The representation is black singers.

Jurrassic World
Duration: 2 minutes
summary: A science fiction action film. "A new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, the Indominus Rex, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree." (imdb)
The film opening connects to the plot by introducing the main characters of the film and giving context. From the opening, we now know the two main leads, the young brothers. They also establish relationships.

The music in the opening is Christmas music. If the snow from the first shot wasn't enough to convey the time of season the music is. Science most of the camera time is on the two boys, it can be interpreted that they are the main characters. There is a family representation. The mise-en-scene in the scene is winter by the snow in the first shot and their clothing. The lighting is also very glowing like with coloring like blue and yellow (not very bright, more like foggy) which gives off the Christmas feel. The camera angle were close-ups, long shots, medium shots, and over the shoulder to name a few. The camera editing wasn't very jarring at all. they used shallow focus a lot.

Film Openings 10/28/21

Film openings are one of the most essential parts of creating a film. It's the very first sequence the audience sees. An opening is what hooks the audience. It gets them intrigued with the film and leads them to keep watching. This can be done in different ways. First, let's discuss the most important aspect of a film opening, the first shot.

The first shot is the very first thing the audience sees. It sets first impressions of the film. It pulls us into the movie. The shot can introduce various things like main ideas, premises, or character arcs.

The elements of a film opening are crucial to ensure it is done correctly. One element is establishing a setting. This lets the audience know where the film is taking place. It should also give slight clues as to the plot or narrative of the film. Mise-en-scene is a key element as well. In the opening sequence, it lets the audience get the feel of the movie. This helps them in deciding if they want to continue watching. Costumes can convey the time period of the films. Character placement can give insight into character relationships or representation. The lighting is also a significant part of the Mise-en-scene. It helps the interpretation of a film's narrative. For example, bright and sunny: something good is to come. Dark and dim: something bad will follow. Representing genre is a key element. Establishing the genre so the audience will have some idea of the film is great. This can be done by genre conventions. Cinematography is another key feature in opening scenes. The way the footage is presented to the audience is important for interpretation. It has to also look pleasing to them.

The purpose of a film opening can vary. It can be used to introduce a villain or a hero. This type of opening raises the stakes while introducing the main characters and key plot points. Establishing relationships in opening scenes can be used to create sympathy and give insight into character relations. Establishing a genre tells us the tone and the elements within the genre. Plot catalyst gives the audience background information to understand the characters and the plot more.

In the action genre, the opening scene usually starts with a bang. It typically opens with an action scene. Usually with no context to get the audience thinking "what is going on?". In my research of opening methods, I've found that the method exciting day in the life of the main character is very common. Movies like Indiana Jones and the Raider of the Lost Ark, James Bond Quantum of solace, and Men in Black (1977) are perfect examples of this in their opening scenes. Some others ones you may see are cold opens (teaser), like in Jurasstic Park (1993)

In musicals, it's very common to start off with singing and dancing right away.  The methods they use to start the dance and singing number are typical using an uneventful day in life method. This can be shown in Hairspray (2007) and La La Land. This isn't always the case. In the heights, the first method used is a flashback and then shows his uneventful day in the life with music and signing.

In science fiction, the opening scene usually has a lot of exposition to build up the story world. The most common method of this is by a prologue. Ready Player One uses a prologue voiceover. Star wars use a prologue without a voiceover and instead makes you read it.

Cinematography 10/6/21

Cinematography is defined as the art of making films. It incorporates many different aspects like angles, shot types, framing, movement, and so on. It's really all about what exactly filmmakers use to perfect their vision in film.

For additional notes, convection, and examples on what cinematography is composed of, check out my glossary! ( link below)

https://browardcountyschools-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/r/personal/0612112094_my_browardschools_com/_layouts/15/Doc.aspx?sourcedoc=%7B827F5900-1439-4BFD-875B-50AC9A987DDF%7D&file=Media%20Studies%20Glossary.xlsx&wdOrigin=OFFICECOM-WEB.MAIN.REC&ct=1633563643581&action=default&mobileredirect=true

Earlier this year in September, I worked on an assigment called identifing shot types and angles. We had to apply cinemtography knowledge to take diffent certain angles and shots. It was really fun to find a subject and capture them in a specific way and have to either maneuver the camera or subject. It showed insight as to how filmakers really do have to to think out their crafts in what the what the want to show exactly and have it mean so the audience interrprets correctly.

Mise-en-scene 10/6/21

Mise-en-scene addresses many different aspects in films. It's typically things people don't notice like lighting and costumes. It helps to bring together the mood and theme of a scene and also ties into the overall film.

The official definition of mise-en-scene is the overall composition of the shot. All of the little background or up-close details are chosen for a reason. Mise-en-scene is composed of many different elements. It's mainly what you see exactly or literally in a scene. In class, I took we discussed mise-en-scene in deeper detail.

-Lighting is an element of mise-en-scene

-Two major visuals components

1. Design - The look of the setting, props, lighting, and actions

2. Composition- The organization, distribution, balance, and general relationships of actors and objects.

-Nearly everything placed within a frame is done intentionally

-Objects don't always have an individual significance

-The combination of elements creates meaning.

-Allows the viewer to experience a certain time and place.

-Importance for how it makes us feel.

-Think of your first experience (at a new place) and how it made you feel.

3 steps to analyzing mise-en-scene

1. consider the categories lighting, costumes, hair, makeup, props.

2. consider the purpose of the scene

3. how does aesthetics help to establish the purpose.

After learning the basics of mise-en-scene, a partner and I did a mini photography project. We created an arrangement of items to stage an illusion photo using mise-en-scene elements. In our photo, we were going for an army war ground mood in the woods. Personally, I don't think we achieved this but we did try our best. We had mini-army figures on a toy truck, used dark-greyish blue construction paper, drew trees on them, and used brown construction paper as dirt for the woods' flooring. We also covered everything in a thin layer of cotton balls to convey snow. The lighting was darks to give the feeling of the night. Candles were also used as fire pits or campfires just to give some source of light in the picture.

Learning the elements of mise-en-scene has led me to question everything. Why did they put this in the shot? What message or mood is being conveyed? It also allows me to realize how important setting up details in movies are. Mise-en-scene is a great depending factor in how the audience views the film or perceives the mood of the movie.

Genre

Genre contains  many different aspects. Genre gives filmmakers and the audience a set format of content and style to follow and categorize the film. Genres are constantly changing over time with new technology, convections, and sub-genres emerging. Determining genres means taking in all the elements, Mis-en-scene, camera work, editing, cinematography and decided the genre the film follows.

Genres are sorted in different ways. Some may look for the sharing of subject and themes, or the manner of appearance. Genres like horror, action, and comedy sometimes collide with each other in a film creating subgenres. Genres also create their own cycles. For example, the action genre has a cycle of superhero/comic book films. Once the first superhero hero film was released, it created a domino effect of movies with a superhero subject. The following are my notes on genres taken from my classmates' research.

My classmates and I worked on our own PowerPoint presentation of certain genres and shared it with the class. This was certainly a learning experience. It allowed me to get generalized notes on other genre researches so I have a starting ground for my own notes. My genre was musical. I did a deep research dive and learned about the typical convection and patterns within the genre. Learning about genres has made me start to notice the use of themes and convection showing up in movies that are associated with certain genres.
